It was discovered by Matthew Flinders in 1802. American sealer Captain Isaac Pendleton and his crew of forty or so men spent the winter of 1803 sealing and building a forty tonne schooner, "Independence". Frank Potts (later of Bleasdale Wines at Langhorne Creek, South AustraliaLanghorne Creek fame) was the first recorded settler in 1842, before moving to the mainland. John Buick built the first home in the town in 1854.
