{{Taxobox | color = pink | name = Anseriformes | image = 2003017 Whooper Swan.jpg | image_width = 250px | image_caption = Whooper Swan (''Cygnus cygnus'') | regnum = Animalia | phylum = Chordate Chordata | classis = bird Aves | ordo = '''Anseriformes''' | ordo_authority = Johann Georg Wagler Wagler, 1831 | subdivision_ranks = Families | subdivision = *Anhimidae *Anseranatidae *Anatidae *†Cnemiornithidae *†Dromornithidae *†Presbyornithidae }} The order '''Anseriformes''' contains about 150 species of birds in three families: the Anhimidae (the screamers), Anseranatidae (the Magpie-goose), and the Anatidae, which includes over 140 species of waterfowl, among them the ducks, goose geese, and swans. All species in the order are highly adapted for an aquatic existence at the water surface. All are web-footed for efficient swimming (although some have subsequently become mainly terrestrial).

Evolution
The earliest known Anseriform is the recently discovered ''Vegavis'', which lived during the Cretaceous period [http://www.livescience.com/animalworld/050125_dino_chickens.html]. It is thought that the Anseriformes originated when two groups of specialised filter feeders diverged from the Charadriiformes (plovers, gulls and allies) by evolving different mechanisims to filter small food particles from water. The flamingos developed a filter structure in the lower part of the bill; the ancestors of the Anseriformes developed the characteristic bill structure that they still share. The combination of the internal shape of the bill and a modified tongue acts as a suction pump to draw water in at the tip of the bill and expel it from the sides and rear; an array of fine filter plates called ''lamellae'' traps small particles, which are then licked off and swallowed. image:magpie.goose.grooming.arp.750pix.jpg thumb|left|250px|Magpie Goose ''Anseranas semipalmata'' All Anseriformes have this basic structure, but many have subsequently adopted alternative feeding strategies: geese graze on plants, the Merginae saw-billed ducks catch fish; even the screamers, which have bills that seem on first sight more like those of the game birds, still have vestigal lamellae.

Taxonomy
Image:Galloanseri2.png 279px|thumb|right|Relationships between bird orders The Anseriformes and the Galliformes (pheasants etc) are ancestral to neognathous birds, and should follow ratites and tinamous in bird classification systems. The Dendrocygninae are sometimes given full family status as the Dendrocygnidae. * '''ORDER ANSERIFORMES''' ** Family Anhimidae *** Screamers, 3 species ** Family Anseranatidae ***Magpie-goose ** Family Anatidae *** Subfamily Dendrocygninae: 10 species of whistling duck. *** Subfamily Thalassorninae: 1 species White-backed Duck. *** Subfamily Anserinae: 23 species of swans and goose geese. *** Subfamily Stictonettinae: 1 species Freckled Duck. *** Subfamily Plectropterinae: 1 species Spur-winged Goose. *** Subfamily Tadorninae: 23 species of shelducks, sheldgeese and steamer-ducks. *** Subfamily Anatinae: about 71 species of dabbling duck dabbling, and diving duck diving ducks. *** Subfamily Merginae: 20 species of eiders, scoters, sawbills and other sea-ducks. *** Subfamily Oxyurinae: 8 species of stiff-tail ducks and allies. ** Family Cnemiornithidae *** 2 species of New Zealand Goose (extinct) ** Family Dromornithidae *** 7 species of Dromornithidae Mihirungs (extinct) ** Family Presbyornithidae ***Vegavis (extinct) {{Wikispecies|Anseriformes}} {{Wikibookspar|Dichotomous Key|Anseriformes}} Category:Anseriformes * bg:ГъÑ?коподобни cs:Vrubozobí de:Gänsevögel eo:Anseroformaj birdoj fr:Anseriformes fy:Goeseftigen is:Gásfuglar it:Anseriformes he:×?ווז×?×™×? ka:ბáƒ?ტისნáƒ?ირნი lt:Žąsiniai paukÅ¡Ä?iai li:Eendechtege nl:Anseriformes ja:カモ目 pl:Blaszkodziobe pt:Anseriformes sl:Plojkokljuni fi:Sorsalinnut sv:AndfÃ¥glar zh:é›?形目 {{sisterlinkswp|Category:Anseriformes}} {{commons|Category:Anseriformes}} The order '''Anseriformes''' contains about 150 species of bird in three families: the Anhimidae (the screamers), Anseranatidae (the Magpie-goose), and the Anatidae, which includes over 140 species of waterfowl, among them the ducks, goose geese, and swans.
