The poem was about the village Athlone, Ireland, Goldsmith's childhood home. He lived in Lissoy Parsonage, which was also called Auburn.
* Auburn University gets its name from the town in which it is located, Auburn, Alabama. It gets its nickname "Tigers" from line 355: "Where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey". AU is also called "the loveliest village on the plain", as referenced in the first line of the poem.
