Duke of Burgundy

*** Shopping-Tip: Duke of Burgundy

The '''Duchy of Burgundy''', today Bourgogne, has its origin in the small portion of traditional lands of Burgundians west of river Saône which in 843 was allotted to Charles the Bald's West Franks kingdom of West Franks. As it was their kingdom of Burgundy to France, the name Burgundy established within centuries to this border region, as the most proper lands of Burgundians lost central power and disintegrated into principalities known with other names. The Western kings appointed governors to this province with the title Duke, and sooner or later the ducal position established as hereditary. The following is a list of the '''Dukes of Burgundy''' (French language French: ''Duc de Bourgogne''), a title in the peerage of France. *Richard, Duke of Burgundy Richard of Autun, ''the Justicier'' (880921) *Rudolph, Duke of Burgundy Rudolph of Burgundy (king of France from 923) (921923) *Hugh, Duke of Burgundy Hugh the Black (923952) *Gilbert, Duke of Burgundy Gilbert of Chalon (952956) *Odo, Duke of Burgundy Odo of Paris (956-965) *Otto-Henry, Duke of Burgundy Otto-Henry ''the Great'' (9651002) *Otto-William, Duke of Burgundy Otto-William (10021004) ''1004: Burgundy annexed by France'' *Henry I of France (10161032) ''Capetian Dukes'' ''*All dukes named 'Eudes' are somtimes called 'Odo', they being the same name.'' *Robert I, Duke of Burgundy Robert I (10321076), brother of Henry I *Hugh I, Duke of Burgundy Hugh I (10761079) *Eudes I, Duke of Burgundy Eudes I ''the Red'' (10791103) *Hugh II, Duke of Burgundy Hugh II (11031143) Image:BlasonBOURGOGNEancien.PNG 100px|right *Eudes II, Duke of Burgundy Eudes II (11431162) *Hugh III, Duke of Burgundy Hugh III (11621192) *Eudes III, Duke of Burgundy Eudes III (11921218) *Hugh IV, Duke of Burgundy Hugh IV (12181271) *Robert II, Duke of Burgundy Robert II (12721306) *Hugh V, Duke of Burgundy Hugh V (13061315) *Eudes IV, Duke of Burgundy Eudes IV (13151349) *Philip I, Duke of Burgundy Philip I of Rouvre (13491361) Image:Armoiries Bourgogne Moderne.png 100px|right ''House of Valois'' *Philip II, Duke of Burgundy Philip II, the Bold (13641404) *John, Duke of Burgundy John, the Fearless (14041419) *Philip III, Duke of Burgundy Philip III, the Good (14191467) *Charles I, Duke of Burgundy Charles I, the Bold (14671477) *Mary of Burgundy (14771482) In 1477, the territory of the Duchy of Burgundy is annexed by France. In the same year, Mary married Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor Archduke Maximilian of Austria, giving the Habsburgs control of the remainder of the Burgundian inheritance. Although the Duchy of Burgundy itself remained in the hands of France, the Habsburgs remained in control of the other Burgundian inheritance, notably the Low Countries, and often used the term ''Burgundy'' to refer to it (Burgundian Circle), until the late 18th century, when the Austrian Low Countries was lost to French Republic.
