As of 2000, the population is 24,595. Its county seat is Edgefield, South Carolina Edgefield Geographic references ⁶.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,312 square kilometer km² (507 square mile mi²). 1,300 km² (502 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water.

Demographics
As of the census Geographic references#2 ² of 2000, there were 24,595 people, 8,270 households, and 6,210 families residing in the county. The population density was 19/km² (49/mi²). There were 9,223 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 56.77% Race (U.S. census) White, 41.51% Race (U.S. census) Black or Race (U.S. census) African American, 0.33% Race (U.S. census) Native American, 0.24% Race (U.S. census) Asian, 0.03% Race (U.S. census) Pacific Islander, 0.44% from race (U.S. census) other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 2.05% of the population were Race (U.S. census) Hispanic or Race (U.S. census) Latino of any race. There were 8,270 households out of which 34.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% were Marriage married couples living together, 15.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.90% were non-families. 22.40% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.12.
