'''Georgi Asparuhov''' (Георги Ð?Ñ?парухов), nicknamed '''Gundi''' (
May 4,
1943 –
June 30,
1971) was one of the greatest
Bulgarian
football (soccer) football players of all time.
Asparuhov was a
striker for
PFC Levski Sofia Levski Sofia from 1960 to 1961 and 1964 to 1971, and for
Botev Plovdiv from 1961 to 1963. He played 245 matches and scored 150 goals in the highest Bulgarian division. Many big clubs in Europe tried to get him to play for them. After the match between Levski and
SL Benfica Benfica in the
UEFA Champions League European Cup in 1965-66, when Benfica (with
Eusebio and others stars in the squad) eliminated Levski after very difficult 3:2 and 2:2 matches, Europe started admiring Gundi, who scored four goals in these two games. He is also the first player to score two goals in Benfica's stadium{{citation needed}}. After this match, Levski became well-known in Europe. The rich
Portugal Portuguese club was ready to pay to get Asparuhov in their team, but
Communism became the barrier for the transfer.
For the
Bulgaria national football team, Asparuhov featured in 50 games and has 19 goals. He was the first Bulgarian to score a goal at
Wembley Stadium Wembley against
England national football team England. He also scored the only goal for the Bulgarian team on their first participation at the
Football World Cup World Cup, in
Football World Cup 1962 Chile '62. Georgi Asparuhov also scored the only goal for Bulgaria in
Football World Cup 1966 England '66.
Asparuhov died in a
car crash in 1971. At his funeral, over 200,000 people went to Sofia to visit his resting place. Together with him died another great talent of Bulgarian football,
Nikola Kotkov.
