Germán Busch Province''
'''German Busch Becerra''' [''kherman''] (
March 23 1903 -
August 23 1939) was a
Bolivia Bolivian military and political leader.
Busch was born in San Javier, Santa Cruz province, Bolivia. As a young man he joined the Bolivian army, eventually rising to the rank of
colonel. He served in the
Chaco War (1932-35) in which Bolivia was defeated by
Paraguay. Busch, who is considered by Bolivians to be a hero of that war due to several brave actions, became the leader of cavalry and chief of the general staff. On May 17, 1936, Busch helped lead a military coup and became partof a government junta, of which he served as chairman for three days. Busch again became chairman of the junta on
July 13 1937 at the demand of several important army officers and
socialism socialist leaders. Busch would serve as head of state for the rest of his life.
Busch restored the constitution which was suspended after the 1936 coup, and made plans to restore the nearly collapsed Bolivian economy. In May 1938 he was elected President by a constituent assembly. He provoked controversy by confiscating an investment in Bolivian oil reserves from the Standard Oil Company. For some time, Busch was believed to be restoring democracy in Bolivia, but in April 1939, frustrated by labor troubles and political infighting, he suspended the constitution and began to establish a dictatorship. Because his army contained thousands of
Germany German advisors and German-trained soldiers, Busch was suspected to have
Nazism Nazi tendencies. However, Busch strongly denied this, claiming that his regime was "uniquely Bolivian."
Busch died of a gunshot wound while at a birthday party for his brother-in-law in
La Paz. It was officially announced that Bush committed
suicide due to the depression that he was suffering over the state of the country. Though it is suspected by some that he may have been murdered, the explanation of suicide is generally accepted.
