Its main source of employment is crofting. Attractions on the island include two lighthouses, both built in 1851, remains of two early churches, and birds including Common Pied Oystercatcher oystercatchers, ringed plovers, Common Redshank redshank and Eurasian Curlew curlew. Ferry Ferries sail to the island from Stromness on the Orkney Mainland and Moness on Hoy.
