She was laid down by Scott's Shipbuilding and Engineering at Greenock in Scotland on 27 February 1935, launched on 23 March 1936 and commissioned on 29 December 1936. ''Hotspur'' participated in the First Battle of Narvik in April 1940, the Battle of Cape Matapan in March 1941 and the evacuation of Greece in April 1941, and attacked and sank the enemy Germany German submarine Unterseeboot 79 ''U-79'' in the Mediterranean north of Sollum while in company with the destroyer HMS Hasty (H24) ''Hasty'' on 23 December 1941. ''Hotspur'' was transferred to the Dominican Republic on 23 November 1948 and renamed ''Trujillo''. See HMS Hotspur HMS ''Hotspur'' for other ships of this name.
