Built at John Brown (shipbuilder) John Brown & Co. in Scotland in the early 1960's, at a cost of about £10.5 million. She had a large floodable dock in her stern, with a large flight deck over the top. She carried 4 Landing Craft Utility LCU and 4 LCVP landing craft. The extensive use of asbestos in pipe lagging and fire prevention arrangements, led to the vessel being too expensive to overhaul. She was replaced by HMS Bulwark (L15) HMS ''Bulwark'' in 2004.

Service history
*Took part in the Falklands War in 1982. *Was the scene of a Westland Sea King Sea King helicopter accident when Special Air Service SAS were cross-decking on 19th May 1982.
