An '''index''' is a detailed list, usually arranged alphabetically, of the specific information in a book
publication or
multimedia collection. It is designed to help the reader find information quickly and easily. Ideally, an index is not simply a list of the major terms in a publication, but an organized map of its contents.
The indexing process includes the selection of terms to be indexed, qualifying these with subentries where appropriate, and editing to improve cohesiveness, consistency, accuracy, and usefulness.
In
books, indexes are usually placed near the end. They complement the
table of contents by enabling access to information by subject, whereas contents listings enable access through broad categories arranged in the order they occur. Indexs often add value to a book; librarians and teachers will often consult an index to determine whether a book would be a good addition to the collection or curriculum.
Indexing is usually done by freelancers hired by publishers or book packagers.
Indexing skills are also applied to periodicals, databases, and ebooks, and
web indexing is now a major industry.
