'''Juninho''', full name '''Osvaldo Giroldo Junior''', also known as '''Juninho Paulista''', (born
February 22,
1973 in
São Paulo) is a
Brazilian
football (soccer) midfielder, a
Football World Cup World Cup winner in
Football World Cup 2002 2002.
Juninho started his career with
São Paulo Futebol Clube São Paulo in 1992. He made headway in
England when he signed for
Middlesbrough F.C. Middlesbrough in 1995, as his classy and fast dribbling playing style was a delight for Boro fans, but not enough to save the club from relegation in 1997. Juninho would switch to
Atlético de Madrid Atlético Madrid for two seasons, come back to Middlesbrough for 1999-2000, move back to Brazil with
Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama Vasco da Gama and
Clube de Regatas do Flamengo Flamengo, before returning -- for his third stint -- to Boro in 2002. He signed with
Celtic F.C. Celtic in 2004, but was released from his contract after 8 months, on
April 5,
2005. He then signed with the Brazilian team,
Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras Palmeiras.
Sometimes Juninho is confused with Juninho Pernambucano who currently plays for the first division French team Olympique Lyonnais. He currently is the team's "free kicker" and has scored many goals in both the French Ligue and the UEFA Champions League, but has never played for an English team, although links with Premiership side Aston Villa has surfaced in recent months.
Juninho was known as TLF (The Little Fella) by Boro fans and is regarded by most fans as the greatest player to have worn a Boro shirt in the modern era. The nickname is probably due to his height: only 1.57 meters.
For
Brazil national football team Brazil, Juninho has been capped over 50 times. He helped his country to the World Cup title in 2002.
