military dictatorship, especially in Latin America, which is officially run by a committee of high-ranking
military officers. Juntas are often not collegial in practice, as one officer often holds most power. Well-known juntas include
Augusto Pinochet's rule of Chile and the
Proceso de Reorganización Nacional, the infamous military dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983. ''See also
