'''Lorraine''' is a town located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 930. The town is named after Lorraine (province) Lorraine, a region in France. The '''Town of Lorraine''' is on the south border of the county.

History
The town was formed in 1804 from part of the Mexico (town), New York Town of Mexico (Oneida County, New York). At that time the town was called "Malta," but the name was changed to the current name in 1808.

Geography
The south town line is the border of Oswego County, New York. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 101.0 square kilometer km² (39.0 square mile mi²). 101.0 km² (39.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.03% is water.

Demographics
As of the censusGeographic references#2 2 of 2000, there were 930 people, 327 households, and 248 families residing in the town. The population density was 9.2/km² (23.8/mi²). There were 400 housing units at an average density of 4.0/km² (10.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.57% White (U.S. Census) White, 0.00% African American (U.S. Census) African American, 0.00% Native American (U.S. Census) Native American, 0.00% Asian (U.S. Census) Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander (U.S. Census) Pacific Islander, 0.00% from Race (U.S. Census) other races, and 0.43% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population were Hispanic (U.S. Census) Hispanic or Latino (U.S. Census) Latino of any race. There were 327 households out of which 41.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were Marriage married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% were non-families. 17.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.24. In the town the population was spread out with 31.1% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.1 males. The median income for a household in the town was $38,523, and the median income for a family was $40,417. Males had a median income of $32,083 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,471. 15.5% of the population and 9.8% of families were below the poverty line. 15.5% of those under the age of 18 and 17.9% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
