'''Matthew Moore Hardy''' (born
September 23,
1974 in
Cameron, North Carolina) is an
United States American professional wrestling professional wrestler, currently working for the
WWE Friday Night SmackDown! SmackDown! brand of
World Wrestling Entertainment.
Career
Before his then-WWF debut with his brother
Jeff Hardy Jeff, Matt was trained by former wrestler
Dory Funk, Jr. Before signing with the WWF, Matt and Jeff ran their own wrestling
professional wrestling promotion promotion,
Organization of Modern Extreme Grappling Arts OMEGA Wrestling, in which Matt competed under the name '''High Voltage'''. Other wrestlers associated with OMEGA include
Christopher Daniels,
Amy Dumas,
Shannon Moore and
Gregory Helms.
World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment
Matt (then 19) and Jeff (then just 16) started working for the WWF in 1993 and were initially used in singles matches and in tag matches as
jobber (professional wrestling) jobbers to bigger names. It wasn't until 1998 that the brothers were given a full-time WWF contract.
The Hardyz used a
cruiserweight, fast-paced high flying style in their matches, often leaping from great heights to do damage to their opponents (and themselves in the process.) Although Jeff was better known for his extreme moves, Matt was a prodigious high-flier himself.
Michael Hayes became their manager and with a new look the team won their first
World Tag Team Championship WWF Tag Team Titles in 1999. A few months later, however, they ditched Hayes after losing the titles and joined with
David Heath (wrestler) Gangrel's
stable (professional wrestling) stable,
Brood (professional wrestling) The New Brood. They would enter a feud with Gangrel's former proteges,
Edge and Christian. This feud would continue even after the Hardyz dropped Gangrel, and the two teams engaged in the ''Terri Invitational Tournament''. The Hardyz won and gained
Terri Runnels as their manager. Terri turned on the team in early 2000.
The Hardyz were placed in a triangle
Ladder Match at
WrestleMania XVI WrestleMania 2000 along with
Edge and Christian and the
Dudley Boyz. Though E&C won, all six competitors put on a great performance, only to be outdone a year later in
Tables, Ladders, and Chairs Match TLC.
Matt and Jeff soon found a new manager in their real-life friend
Amy Dumas, known in the WWF as Lita. The three together became known as "Team Xtreme". During this run, Matt and Amy became an off-screen (and later on-screen) couple.
In 2001, After Jeff Hardy's
Intercontinental Championship run, Matt Hardy threatened to leave the WWE if he was not given a singles Championship push.
Scott Levy Raven, who was scheduled to win the
European Championship at
WWE Backlash Backlash, was placed in a match with
Rhyno instead because Matt Hardy was given the European championship, by defeating the late
Eddie Guerrero, on Smackdown two weeks before Backlash. Many of Raven's fans started anti-Matt Hardy sites. Some of those sites still exist while others have turned into Unofficial Raven fan sites.
On the
August 12,
2002 episode of RAW, Matt turned against Jeff, pitting him in a match against
Rob Van Dam. A short time later he joined the ''
WWE Friday Night SmackDown! SmackDown!'' roster. On the
October 3, 2002 edition of the show, Matt used
run-in (professional wrestling) outside interference from
Brock Lesnar to defeat
Mark Calaway The Undertaker.
Now dubbed "'''Matt Hardy - Version 1.0'''," and with his MF'er (Mattitude Follower)
Shannon Moore in his corner, Matt defeated
Peter Gruner Billy Kidman at the
2003 WWE No Way Out No Way Out in
Montreal Montreal, Quebec to claim the
WWE Cruiserweight Championship and, at
WrestleMania XIX in
Seattle, Washington Seattle, defended it against
Oscar Gutierrez Rey Mysterio. The Mattitude
stable (professional wrestling) stable also included the late
Mike Lockwood Crash Holly as Shannon Moore's "Moore-on." Lockwood was later released, Matt later disbanded the stable and returned to RAW in order to be able to travel and work with then-girlfriend, Lita. He would later turn face once more by engaging in a rivalry with then heel, Kane.
Hardy and Lita were an off-screen couple for six years, and used to share a home in North Carolina. Their romance came to an end in late
February 2005 (according to Matt's official
website) due to Lita's affair with fellow WWE superstar
Adam Copeland Edge.
Release from WWE
Along with his friend
Terry Gerin Rhyno, Matt Hardy was released by WWE on
April 11,
2005. Matt's release was due to his public handling of the Lita/Edge incident (posting disparaging remarks towards Edge on his website). His release was confirmed publicly by WWE. However, it was further speculated that Hardy was released because management (mainly WWE VP of Talent Relations
John Laurinaitis) did not generally like him, and an excuse to fire him had been presented. In fact,
Triple H, allegedly said of Hardy's release: "he never drew money anyway." Hardy countered this statement in an online interview stating that he and his brother
Jeff, as the Hardy Boyz, had been top sellers of merchandise.
It should be noted that some people believed that Hardy's release (and subsequent rehiring) was part of an elaborate
work (professional wrestling) work. The WWE frequently referenced the Hardy situation on televised broadcasts, whereas normally they would not acknowledge real-life situations, which reflected badly on the WWE onscreen. Given Matt's vitriolic interviews and the fact that Edge's wife accused Edge of
anabolic steroid steroid abuse, this seems possible, but it remains uncertain. All parties have stated that the affair was not a work. However, Since Matt has now been re-hired by WWE, his comments could have been partially or completely worked.
Because of the affair and Hardy being released from the company, Matt's status, especially in the
Internet Wrestling Community, became elevated to a cult-like status. Also, Edge and Lita received jeers from the crowds at WWE events, sometimes resulting in chants of: "You screwed Matt" or "We want Matt," a reference to the
Montreal Screwjob.
Paul Heyman, in a shoot promo, mocked Edge for his actions at
ECW One Night Stand. Lita, for the first time in over five years, turned heel mainly as a result of the affair becoming public knowledge.
Matt Hardy released two character promotional vignettes, that he was planning to use before he was offered a new contract by WWE. Hardy called himself '''The Angelic Diablo''' with the tagline "the scar will become a symbol" in reference to the way in which he has been treated by Lita and WWE. In a condition to his rehiring he was required to shut down his site: thematthardy.com. On the same day, a new similar website began, www.thematthardyshow.com. As of now, the address for Hardy's site is http://www.thehardyshow.com as it now is a show for the Hardys and a select few others.
Return to WWE
On the
June 20,
2005 edition of RAW, during the storyline wedding of Edge and Lita, Matt Hardy's entrance music and video were played when the priest asked if anyone had a reason why the wedding should not go on. Moments later, it was revealed as a joke played by Edge and Lita. On the
July 11 episode of RAW, Matt Hardy made his return, attacking Edge as he made his way to the ring for his match against Kane and calling him out by his real name (Adam). On the July 14th edition of WWE's webcast Byte This!, which featured Lita as its guest, one of the callers was Matt himself. The two engaged in a huge argument, believed to have been a complete shoot, which led to Lita walking off the set. Reportedly Matt reached a verbal agreement with WWE to return to the promotion in early
June 2005 June.
Matt appeared at a scheduled
Ring of Honor event on
July 16 in
Woodbridge, Connecticut where he defeated
Christopher Daniels via submission. Hardy also cut a brief promo where he continued in full 'worked shoot' mode, attacking WWE and
John Laurinaitis. Following his official return to WWE, Hardy was met with a backlash which involved him getting booed out of the arena at an ROH event following a match with
Nelson Erazo Homicide, which Hardy won. His final ROH appearance happened the day after this event, where he lost to
Roderick Strong. Contrary to previous reports, he would not make an appearance in
Total Nonstop Action Wrestling TNA.
On
July 18,
2005 Matt Hardy attacked Edge during one of Edge's matches and did the same the following week as well.
On
August 1,
2005 Vince McMahon came out on RAW and officially acknowledged Hardy's return to WWE, adding that Hardy would face Edge at the upcoming
SummerSlam List of WWE pay-per-view events pay-per-view. On
August 8, Matt Hardy made his in-ring return, defeating
Gene Snitsky on RAW. Seconds after the Victory, Matt was attacked by Edge and as he was being carried backstage, Matt counterattacked Edge in a locker room.
On
August 21,
2005, at SummerSlam, Matt Hardy and Edge faced each other in a battle which was hardly considered a wrestling match but an all-out brawl calling the "Kill or Be Killed" Match. The match wound up coming to a premature end when Edge dropped Hardy onto the top of a ring post, causing him to bleed and eventually leading to the referee ending the match on the grounds that Hardy couldn't continue. Edge was declared the winner.
After SummerSlam, the two continued fighting on ''RAW'', with one encounter being a Street Fight that resulted in both men falling off the stage into electrical wires.
At
WWE Unforgiven 2005 Edge faced Matt Hardy in a steel cage match. Hardy had just about won the match with a Side Effect off the top rope, when Lita came in and broke up the pin and was met with the Twist of Fate. Matt hit a legdrop off the top of the cage onto Edge and then gained the pinfall for the victory.
Hardy and Edge were scheduled to face each other at
WWE Homecoming in a Loser Leaves ''RAW'', Money-in-the-Bank ladder match. Edge's briefcase holding the contract for his WWE World title shot would be suspended above the ring. The winner of the match gets the contract and the loser is gone from ''RAW''.
As the match concluded, Matt Hardy did not prevail against Edge via Lita. After beating the hell out of each other, Edge tied Matt's arms though the ropes and then Lita trapped Hardy in a
professional wrestling holds#crucifix (pin) crucifix hold as Matt could only watch Edge win. When the match ended, of course Edge and Lita gloated, but surprisingly, Matt took it like a man, and left the arena afterwards.
With his defeat at the hands of Edge, Matt Hardy decided to move back over to ''SmackDown!''. His redebut happened
October 21,
2005, however it was in a singles match against
Mike Bucci Simon Dean (which Hardy won), rather than as a guest on
Jason Reso Christian's Peep Show as had been previously advertised.
SmackDown!
Matt was among five ''SmackDown!'' superstars—
Jason Reso Christian, JBL, Rey Mysterio, and Hardcore Holly—to be voted by the fans to compete at
WWE Taboo Tuesday, against Edge and
Chris Mordetsky Chris Masters. Only two of the five Superstars would compete, and the two that receive the most votes on WWE.com would be partners.
Originally, WWE pushed for Rey Mysterio and JBL as the team to choose. At Taboo Tuesday, it was Matt Hardy and Rey Mysterio who were chosen (with Matt getting 31% and Rey getting 29%), and they defeated Chris Masters and Gene Snitsky.
Edge did not wrestle due to a legitimate chest injury; the
kayfabe reason he gave for not wrestling, however, was that he "didn't care" about Matt Hardy and Rey Mysterio, the fans, or the ''RAW'' brand. This was seen as out of character for Edge, who had been the so-called ringleader against the ''SmackDown!'' brand. In fact, it was an angle involving Edge that started the feud between the two brands.
It was confirmed on the
November 9,
2005 edition of Byte This that Matt Hardy and
Ashley Massaro (2005 Raw Diva Search winner) have been a couple since shortly after his return.
On the
November 11th,
2005 episode of
SmackDown!,
Rey Mysterio competed against
Randy Orton for a spot on the
Survivor Series team for the
SmackDown! brand. After Orton got himself disqualified, he and his father Bob Orton began to double-team Mysterio. But Matt Hardy came down to the ring to make the save shortly thereafter. It looked like Rey Mysterio and Matt would form a tag team match, but Rey became the tag team partner of
Dave Batista Batista following the death of Eddie Guerrero.
The following week on
SmackDown!'s tribute to the late
Eddie Guerrero, Matt Hardy competed in an interpromotional match against RAW's Carlito. Hardy won the match. The following week on
SmackDown Matt attacked JBL and a match against the former WWE champion was made for
WWE Armageddon Armageddon. In a less-than-stellar bout, Matt Hardy lost the match after JBL's patented Clothesline from Hell. Matt was !squashed" in this fashion after he side-stepped The Undertaker's brutal assault of assorted Smackdown
jobbers in an attempt to get to fellow brand star
Randy Orton, Hardy was lectured sternly by 'Taker afterwords for breaking his script to look out for his own interests. Hardy took the squashings (by 'Taker's real life buddy and locker room co-leader Bradshaw) that followed in stride.
Not long after, he injured Booker T at a house show causing Booker to take a long time off afterwards.
On the
December 30th,
2005 episode of
SmackDown!, Matt had an
WWE Armageddon Armageddon rematch with JBL. During the match,
Marty Wright The Boogeyman came out. JBL got scared and left the ring resulting in a count-out and a win for Matt.
At the
2006 Royal Rumble, Matt fell victim to the
Nelson_Frazier%2C_Jr.#Finishing_and_signature_moves Visagra and was eliminated by
Nelson_Frazier%2C_Jr. Viscera.
On the
January 20th,
2006 episode of
Smackdown!, Fit Finlay made his WWE debut against Hardy in a match where Hardy won due to disqualification on Finlay's part. Finlay was heavily booed during the match while Hardy was cheered highly.
On the
February 10,
2006 episode of Smackdown!, Hardy lost a fatal four way match against
Chris Benoit,
Orlando Jordan and
John Bradshaw Layfield to determine the No. 1 Contender for
Booker T's
WWE United States Championship, tapping out to Benoit's
Professional wrestling holds#Crossface Crippler Crossface. Later backstage, Hardy was approached by
Melina of
MNM, who said it was a shame that Matt wasn't part of a winning team like MNM, and that if he scratched her back, she'd scratch his.
The following week, on the
February 17,
2006 edition of Smackdown!, he defeated Simon Dean in a singles match. After the match, he approached
Melina Perez Melina backstage. He wanted to face MNM in a tag team match at the No Way Out Pay-per-view. It was rumored that his partner might've been
Road Warrior Animal or even his brother,
Jeff Hardy. His partner turned out to be none other than
Chris Chavis Tatanka, and the two of them eventually ended up being victorious in the match. They re-challenged the still-champs the next Smackdown!, however they lost. The next week, Road Warrior Animal teamed up with Matt to try for the titles once more, but were defeated. Animal brutally attacked Hardy, being tired of "pulling all the weight in tag teams", and they fueded.
On the
March 17,
2006 edition of SmackDown!, Hardy lost a Money in the Bank Qualifying Match for
WrestleMania 22 to Road Warrior Animal when Animal hit him with brass knuckles, before getting the pin. The ref then raised Animal's arm and the brass knuckles fell to the canvas. The ref then reversed his decision and Matt won and qualified for the ladder match. This will be Hardy's third ladder match at WrestleMania, his first two being at
WrestleMania 2000 and
WrestleMania X-Seven.
At
WrestleMania 22, Matt Hardy was unsuccessful when
Rob Van Dam emerged as the winner.
