'''Middlesbrough''' is a
Borough and
Districts of England local government district in
North East England named after the town of
Middlesbrough, with a resident population in 2001 of 134,855. 2005 mid-year estimates suggest a population of 147,823 and rising. However the population for what is locally regarded as Middlesbrough (with the inclusion of the greater
Eston area, termed as
Greater Middlesbrough) has over 200,000. Middlesbrough is the smallest of the 5 Tees Valley Borough's but the largest of the Towns as the majority of the Borough itself form the Town proper and is mostly urbanised. Middlesbrough lies at the heart of the
Teesside and
Tees Valley urban area which has approximately 730,000 residents. A further 100,000 live on the outskirts, dependent on the income and council of the area.
It is historically part of the
North Riding of Yorkshire, but in 1974 became part of the new
non-metropolitan county of
Cleveland, England Cleveland. Cleveland was formed after the County Borough of Teesside which was created from the merger of the Boroughs of Middlesbrough, Stockton, Billingham, Eston, Langbaurgh, parts of Stokesly rural district and most of Middlesbrough rural district (Thornaby). In 1996 Cleveland was abolished, and Middlesbrough became a
unitary authority, though it remained part of the
North Yorkshire Ceremonial counties of England ceremonial county. The borough borders
Stockton-on-Tees (borough) Stockton-on-Tees to the west,
Redcar and Cleveland to the east and the
Hambleton district of North Yorkshire to the south.
Unlike most English districts, its council is led by a
Elected-mayors-in-the-united-kingdom directly-elected mayor, currently
Ray Mallon. Mr. Mallon was previously a senior officer in
Cleveland Police, and was noted for a
zero-tolerance approach to crime, adopted from the
New York system, during his time as head of Middlesbrough's
Criminal Investigation Department CID.
Unlike the other four Tees Valley boroughs the Middlesbrough does not contain many surrounding villages, with most other settlements acting as suburbs or areas of the town itself. The borough is made up of 23 council wards.
