{{French literature (small)}}
'''Nathalie Sarraute''', born
July 18,
1900 in
Ivanovo,
Russia - died
October 19,
1999 in
Paris, France, was a lawyer and a
Francophone writer of
Russian origin.
Sarraute was born as Natalia/Natacha Tcherniak in Ivanovo, near
Moscow, and passed her childhood between
France and
Russia. In
1909, she and her father moved permanently to
Paris. She studied law (at the Sorbonne), history (in Oxford), and sociology (in Berlin) and became a lawyer. She was also equally interested in
20th century literature, especially
Marcel Proust and
Virginia Woolf, who greatly affected her conception of the novel.
In
1925, she married Raymond Sarraute, a fellow lawyer. In
1932, she wrote her first book called "Tropismes", published in
1939. But because of the beginning of
World War II, the book didn't become popular. In
1941, she was released from her work as a lawyer because of the Nazi-laws. During this time, she had to hide herself and to divorce from her husband (just to protect him - they stayed together). Nathalie consecrated herself to literature - ''Portrait of an Unknown'', applauded by
Jean-Paul Sartre, was written. This book too, only got noticed by insiders; it was the same with her following book, Martereau.
''L'Ère du soupçon'', her essay, served as manifesto for the
nouveau roman. So she became, with
Alain Robbe-Grillet,
Michel Butor and
Claude Simon, one of the figures most associated with the trend of the nouveau roman. Particularly since she was awarded the ''Prix international de littérature'' for her book ''Les fruits d'or'' in 1963. Her breakthrough was made. Sarraute was invited to public-speaking circuits, also in foreign countries. Since 1963, she to dabbled as author of theatre and penned (altogether 7) pieces like ''Le Silence'' (1963), ''Le Mensonge'' (1965) or ''Elle est là'' (1993).
Beside other essays, her domain rested the novel: ''Entre la vie et la mort'' (1968), ''L'Usage de la parole'' (1980) or ''Tu ne t'aimes pas'' (1989). Her works are translated in more than 30 languages. Though her novels aren't that easy to read as they haven't distinctive personalities and no determined actions; they are totally concentrated on psychical phenomenons. Therefore it is doubtful if the reader manages to stay the course. ''Enfance''(1983) in contrast, her autobiography, is very good readable, more pleasing and interesting, which is also filmed.
Her daughter is famous journalist
Claude Sarraute, wife of French Academician
Jean-François Revel.
