Geography
Shawneetown is located at 37°42'53" North, 88°11'0" West (37.714701, -88.183465){{GR|1}}.
According to the
United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2
square kilometer km² (1.2
square mile mi²). 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.25% water.
History
The present town was established in 1937 after flooding on the
Ohio River inundated what is now
Old Shawneetown, Illinois.
Demographics
As of the
census{{GR.html">population density was 457.5/km² (1,181.8/mi²). There were 693 housing units at an average density of 224.8/km² (580.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.17%

There were 632 households out of which 27.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.5% were
Marriage married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.4% were non-families. 35.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 88.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $20,789, and the median income for a family was $33,500. Males had a median income of $32,368 versus $20,208 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $17,834. 27.8% of the population and 20.8% of families were below the
poverty line. 47.2% of those under the age of 18 and 13.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
