New Zealand Order of Merit PCNZM Order of the British Empire DBE (''née'' Poulter) (born

1943) is
New Zealand's second female
Governor-General of New Zealand Governor-General, and as the Queen's representative, lives in
Government House in the capital city of
Wellington, New Zealand Wellington.
She is a graduate of the
University of Otago, where she gained her
Bachelor of Laws LL B in
1967.
Public Life
In
1989, she became the first female Chief District Court Judge and in
1993, she was the first woman to be appointed to the
New Zealand High Court High Court.
Prior to her appointment as Governor-General, she was perhaps best known to the public for presiding over a 1988 inquiry into issues related to cervical cancer and its treatment at Auckland's National Women's Hospital, known as the
Cartwright Inquiry.
Governor-General
Dame Silvia became Governor-General on
April 4,
2001. She is expected to end her term on
August 4,
2006. She will be succeeded by
Anand Satyanand.

She is married to Peter Cartwright.
