'''Tenbury Wells''' is a small scenic market
town in
Worcestershire,
England, lying on the south bank of the
River Teme. The river is the border between Worcestershire and
Shropshire. Previously called just '''Tenbury''', the town became known as Tenbury Wells after the name of the railway station was changed in
1912, in an attempt to publicise the
mineral water being produced from the
water well wells around the town. The town is also known for its
hops,
holly and
mistletoe and auctions are still held each year, in November and December.
The
Castle Tump is a possibly
Iron Age feature about a hundred yards from the town, while notable structures include the
parish church with a
Norman architecture Norman tower, the
Mediaeval bridge over the river, to
Shropshire, and the Chinese-Gothic Pump Rooms, designed by James Cranston in the
1860s, to house baths where the
mineral water was available. James Cranston's son, also called
James Cranston played
cricket for
England. The town's
Victorian era Workhouse, designed by Wilkinson, is now used as Council Buildings. The Workhouse's
infirmary and isolation ward (a separate building) also survive, but both are currently disused.
From
1894 to
1974, it was a
rural district, comprising itself and other villages such as
Stoke Bliss,
Eastham, Worcestershire Eastham and
Rochford, Worcestershire Rochford. From 1974 to
1998, it was in the borough of
Leominster. Since then in has been part of the
Malvern Hills (district) Malvern Hills District.
Famous people associated with Tenbury include
Henry Hill Hickman.
Jason King (radio) Jason King, one half of the
Radio 1 duo
JK and Joel, was born there in
1975.
