Manchester) is a
United Kingdom British politician. Previously the
member of Parliament for Stretford, he is now
member of Parliament for
Manchester Central (UK Parliament constituency) Manchester Central, and is a member of the
Labour Party (UK) Labour Party. He was first elected in
1983. In
1997, he became a junior minister in the Foreign Office, but left the Government in the reshuffle in
1999. He remains a
backbencher.
Since leaving the Government, his voting record shows a strong left-wing inclination, with him appearing as a
rebel teller on several notable occasions. He is also a Vice-President of the
Western European Union.
