The capital is the city of Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi Yamaguchi located in the center of the prefecture. The largest city, by contrast, is Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Shimonoseki.

History
Yamaguchi Prefecture was formerly divided into Nagato Province Nagato and Suo Province Suo provinces. It was part of the Mori clan domain during the Sengoku period. After Commodore Matthew Perry (naval officer) Matthew Perry's opening of Japan, clans from Nagato (also called Choshu) played a key role in the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate Tokugawa shogunate and the new imperial government.

*On April 21, 2003, the cities of Tokuyama, Yamaguchi Tokuyama and Shinnanyo, Yamaguchi Shinnanyo and the towns of Kumage, Yamaguchi Kumage from Kumage District, Yamaguchi Kumage District and Kano, Yamaguchi Kano from Tsuno District, Yamaguchi Tsuno District merged to form the new city of Shunan, Yamaguchi Shunan. Tsuno District, Yamaguchi Tsuno District was dissolved as a result of this merger. *On October 1, 2004, the towns of Kuka, Yamaguchi Kuka, Oshima, Yamaguchi Oshima, Tachibana, Yamaguchi Tachibana and Towa, Yamaguchi Towa from Oshima District, Yamaguchi Oshima District merged to form the new town of Suo-Oshima, Yamaguchi Suo-Oshima. *On October 4, 2004, the town of Yamato, Yamaguchi Yamato from Kumage District, Yamaguchi Kumage District merged into the city of Hikari, Yamaguchi Hikari. *On November 1, 2004, the town of Kusunoki, Yamaguchi Kusunoki from Asa District, Yamaguchi Asa District merged into the city of Ube, Yamaguchi Ube. *On February 13, 2005, the towns of Hohoku, Yamaguchi Hohoku, Kikugawa, Yamaguchi Kikugawa, Toyoura, Yamaguchi Toyoura and Toyota, Yamaguchi Toyota from Toyoura District, Yamaguchi Toyoura District merged into the city of Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Shimonoseki. Toyoura District, Yamaguchi Toyoura District was dissolved as a result of this merger. *On February 21, 2005, the town of Obatake, Yamaguchi Obatake from Kuga District, Yamaguchi Kuga District merged into the city of Yanai, Yamaguchi Yanai. *On March 6, 2005, the municipalities of Asahi, Yamaguchi Asahi, Fukue, Yamaguchi Fukue, Kawakami, Yamaguchi Kawakami, Tamagawa, Yamaguchi Tamagawa, Mutsumi, Yamaguchi Mutsumi and Susa, Yamaguchi Susa (all from Abu District, Yamaguchi Abu District) merged into the city of Hagi, Yamaguchi Hagi. *On March 22, 2005, the towns of Heki, Yamaguchi Heki, Misumi, Yamaguchi Misumi and Yuya, Yamaguchi Yuya from Otsu District, Yamaguchi Otsu District merged into the city of Nagato, Yamaguchi Nagato. Otsu District, Yamaguchi Otsu District was dissolved as a result of this merger. *On March 22, 2005, the city of Onoda, Yamaguchi Onoda merged with the town of Sanyo, Yamaguchi Sanyo from Asa District, Yamaguchi Asa District to form the new city of Sanyo-Onoda, Yamaguchi Sanyo-Onoda. Asa District, Yamaguchi Asa District was dissolved as a result of this merger. *On October 1, 2005, the towns of Tokuji, Yamaguchi Tokuji from Saba District, Yamaguchi Saba District and Aio, Yamaguchi Aio, Ajisu, Yamaguchi Ajisu and Ogori, Yamaguchi Ogori (all from Yoshiki District, Yamaguchi Yoshiki District) merged into the city of Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi Yamaguchi(2nd generation) to form the new city of Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi Yamaguchi (3rd generation). Saba District, Yamaguchi Saba District and Yoshiki District, Yamaguchi Yoshiki District were both dissolved as a result of this merger. *On March 20, 2006, the towns of Yu, Yamaguchi Yu, Kuga, Yamaguchi Kuga, Shuto, Yamaguchi Shuto, Nishiki, Yamaguchi Nishiki, Mikawa, Yamaguchi Mikawa and Miwa, Yamaguchi Miwa and the village of Hongou, Yamaguchi Hongo (all from Kuga District, Yamaguchi Kuga District) merged into the city of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Iwakuni.

Tourism
One of the major attractions is the famous Kintai Bridge in the town of Iwakuni. This five arced wooden structure is considered a symbol of Western HonshÅ«. The area on the banks of the Nishiki river close to the bridge is considered among the best places in Japan for Hanami (花見, lit. "flower viewing"), when groups of family and friends gather in early April to view Cherry Blossom.
